Summary0005470: from IEC review Normative reference of a recommendation to use MIME types for AudioVariableType
Description

IEC review comment "Not normative because they are part of a recommendation in 7.19, not a requirement. Move to a Bibliography."

After review the question as to why we only recommend in 7.19 AudioVariableType rather than require was raised. Need to review with the WG to determine if the recommendation can changed to a requirement for 1.05.

Discussed in UA call today. Nobody remembers why conforming to the RFCs is recommended rather than required. Need to Check with Paul Hunkar.

The recommendation is to use the IETF MIME type, but there are other standards for the MIME types is why it is only recommended - so someone is not reading it correctly - so maybe the wording needs to be cleaned up. If a different MINE type (other then the IETF RFC 2045, IETF RFC 2046 and IETF RFC 2047) - is listed it would also be acceptable. The VariableType is normative - the content of the field is only a recommendation.

I think the issue is what good is the type unless we are very specific as to how it is defined.
How would a client use this Type as it is currently defined?

Agreed to change the wording of the statement to "MIME types are defined by other standards such as IETF RFC 2045, IETF RFC 2046 and IETF RFC 2047."
