Summary0008669: The descriptions of UAFX Station are inconsistent
Description

Initially reported by Allex Allmendinger, - OPC Foundation European Certification Test Lab Manager

According to the specification “A UAFX Station shall comprise a conformant IA-station” and a “IA-station shall comprise a End Station Component”. Following those statements, I would expect, that all UAFX Stations always have one IA-Station and inside the IA-Station the End Station Component. But looking at the different graphics in the specifications this is indicated somewhat different.

Further, In 6.5.1 Overview for the UAFX Station definition the spec states:
A UAFX Station is an IA-station (see 6.4) supporting the UAFX communication and application layer (see Figure 1).
But further down it states that a UAFX Station comprises an IA-Station. I guess that this difference in the description is the reason for the difference in the figures. If we say a UAFX Station is an IA-Station then the figures are correct as is but in my opinion the text for the “UAFX Station shall … comprise a conformant IA Station” is wrong, while if we say that the UAFX Station includes an IA-Station it is no IA-Station itself and then the figures and other text parts would probably need to be updated.

From 2023-01-11 NWG Meeting:

We have discussed this issue in today’s meeting and agreed on the following:

1) To resolve the misreading, one can change statements “UAFX comprises an IA Station …”/“UAFX is an IA Station…” to “UAFX implements an IA Station with a UAFX middleware…”. In that sense, the UAFX station essentially is an IA Station (or includes one) with UAFX middleware. Note that in figures, the middleware (could be anything non-uafx, generally speaking) is isolated within the End Station Component. When that middleware is a UAFX middleware – it is an UAFX Station.

3) Update the IA-station Overview (Clause 6.4.1) description to include both UAFX and non-UAFX middleware applications hosted by End Station Components.

2) Update all figures illustrating IA-station and UAFX Station to show both UAFX and non-UAFX middleware consistently.

All UAFX Station figures are updated to show the contained IA-station. Figure 14 now shows UAFX and non-UAFX (Other Middleware) Middleware.
