Summary0008716: Proposal: Aging of specifications
Description

Problem:
Released (Companion) Specifications

  • are potentially based on old templates
  • Randy's tool would probably find discrepancies between the Specification and the NodeSet file
  • Mantis issues sometimes require or lead to NodeSet changes, but the specification is not updated in time
  • other Specifications have advanced, this can lead to inconsistencies
  • Working Groups sometimes disband, but the Specification remains valid

Today's solution:
Working Groups are handling this on a best-effort base.

Proposal:
Define a process that monitors released (Companion) Specs:

  • Any specification has to be reviewed after a predetermined time (e.g. 18 months)
  • This review should be carried out by the responsible WG
  • If the review is overdue (e.g. 6 months), then the Specification gets deprecated
  • When the Specification is deprecated, the Harmonization Group has the chance to take over ownership of that Specification
  • Both the Specification and the NodeSet file shall contain the fixed date for review and deprecation
  • Minimum action during review is to update the review and deprecation date

My opinion:

  • This is not (only) a UA topic. It has a political dimension.

  • We as OPC F should only deprecate specifications that are broken (not implementable). Some older specs have likely been implemented and deprecating makes these vendors look silly.

  • Problem reports (Mantis, Emails, ...) should be the the trigger to get active.
The download page should point to a Mantis project that lists the current errors. From time to time we should send a reminder to the WG to address the reported problems.

Agreed to :
make mantis read-only for anonymous.
create Mantis projects for all companion specs
name mantis projects with the document number
hyperlink from the website spec database recrord to the mantis project
validate nodeset with latest tool and enter any errors as mantis issue in the project
